Branding in Politics: At the Polls and in Congress

What Do Politicians Sell to You?

They sell themselves.  Your vote is the currency they want and their personality is the product.  Watch closely and you will see how political campaigns mimic professional advertising agencies.

Politicians Also Package and Sell Laws to You.

Whenever there is a large package of laws that needs to be passed, the author usually gives it a snappy title that politicians think would get it the most votes.  It doesn't matter what's actually in the laws, just that the title sounds good.  Some of my favorites are the "Clear Skies Act" that allows corporations to burn dangerous garbage and the "Protecting Children from Child Pornographers Act of 2011", which allows the US government to require that Internet Service Providers keep digital records of every single thing anyone does on a computer for up to one year.

How would it look on a politicians record to vote against the "Clear Skies Act" or the "Protecting Children from Child Pornographers Act of 2011"?  No one is going to take the time to look at the content of these laws, but it would sure make for some nasty commercials come election season.

Before You Fall for the Hype, Read Their Resumes

Consider an election season a really long interview for very important jobs.  You're the boss.  These politicians are supposed to work for you.  Do some homework and find out who you think is the best for the job and why.
