Why Political Plumber?

Hi Everyone,

Even though I just started this blog two days, ago, I don't think I chose the right name.

So, this is the blog, re-branded and ready to go!

Who Am I?

My name is Tony Nguyen. I am, politically, an independent, but am in the process of switching to "Decline to State". Therefore, I have no agenda except one - to make politics easy to understand so you can make informed decisions. My hope is that you find the information fun and useful. I am also a graduate student at the George Washington University for Political Management and have lobbied for non-profits, so I have practical experience.

I hope that if something in politics pisses you off that you'll go do something about it. I will always try to help connect you to the proper people or agency in local, state or federal government.

Along those lines, I hope to start a non-profit that will connect regular people to government, so that our voices are heard. Please send formal requests to together.gov@gmail.com and I will try to help you with your problem, free of charge.

I figure, corporations and issues have lobbyists (people who communicate with elected officials), why can't you?

What I Will Post

Interesting Politics - Most days, I will write on a political issue and show why it could be relevant to you. Originally, I was only going to post on laws that no one has time to read or understand, but I think that would get too boring. I think you would agree that most laws that get passed these days are crap anyways.

Political Terms - I will also post political terms and ideas so that you can better understand government.

Voter Information - During election times, I will post for each proposition, measure and candidate, filtering as much garbage as possible, but always providing convenient links to the source material for you to read. I will never tell you which way to vote.

Why Political Plumber?

Think back to the Presidential Election of 2008. Now think about the name Joe. "Joe the Plumber" was chosen to represent the normal American. Anytime there is an election, politicians will claim that their opponents are "out of touch". This tactic is to make the other person look bad because they're not like you. And we don't like people who aren't like us.

It's simple, effective and plays on our basic fear and hatred of things that don't fit in our world. This is one of the many tricks politicians and the media use to distract us from the real issues. I consider myself a normal American who happens to know a little about politics - a political plumber.

I also thought plumber was appropriate because of how much bovine excrement is in the pipes of our government.

This political blog is for people who hate "politics" and just want to get down to business. I start every entry asking one question: Why does this matter?

I sincerely hope this information gives you some measure of the sense of power that you have in your right to vote. If we vote together - the players have no choice but to obey.

Thank You

Thank you for taking time to read this and to be willing to engage in political thought. Hopefully it will turn into action as you continue along with me.

  2. Congrats on starting this blog :-) I'll be watching closely. I'm curious if you've followed the efforts of Larry Lessig?
Either his work centered around reforming copyright law.

Or more importantly, his focus on the triangle of $ and influence: lobbyists, special interests, and congress
